The Zen of Isca

  • The purpose of Isca is to enable science to be done.
  • Specifically, the science of the atmospheres and oceans of Earth and other planets.
  • Isca will always be open source.
  • Isca values contributions by the community.
  • Isca values simplicity over complication.
  • The models emerging from Isca are neither necessarily simple nor complex.
  • Isca is not designed for IPCC or for MIPs, but does not spurn them.
  • Isca will be opinionated about the best way to do something.
  • Isca will be flexible enough for someone to do it another way.
  • Isca will be easy for individual scientists to configure and use.
  • Isca will not be designed for a single computer architecture.
  • Isca will evolve...

The Isca Song

(to be sung to the tune of YMCA, by the Village People)

Post doc, there’s no need to feel down
I said, post doc, pick yourself off the ground
I said, post doc, ’cause you’re in a new town
There’s no need to be unhappy
Post doc, there’s a tool you can use
I said, post doc, when you’re feeling confused
You can download, and I’m sure you will find
Many ways to model planets

It’s fun to play with ISCA
It’s fun to play with ISCA
They have everything from astronomy
To a bucket model, and topography
It’s fun to play with ISCA
It’s fun to play with ISCA
You can get a run on, you can have a good meal
It’ll be done once you’ve had your tea

Post doc, I was once in your shoes
My h-index had me down and out with the blues
I felt no prof cared about my hard work
I felt academia didn’t have enough perks
That’s when someone came up to me
And said, post doc, take a walk up the street
There’s a framework called the ISCA
It can start you back on your way.
